Prospective Students

I am looking for self-motivated students, who are interested in machine learning, computer vision, signal and image processing, medical image analysis, biomedical imaging, and data science. Please feel free to reach out!

  • I am looking for Ph.D. students to join my group. If you are interested, please feel free to send me an email with your CV, and email subject as “[PhD application] ”. More application details can be found in the following.
  • If you are a UM student interested in doing research with me, please feel free to send me an email with your CV, and email subject as “[Join research lab – UM student] ”.
  • If you are student from other institutes and interested in collaboration, welcome to drop me an email as well.

Ph.D. Recruiting

I am looking for Ph.D. students in the areas of signal & image processing (SIP), machine learning (ML), computer vision (CV), especially who is interested in Biomedical AI. Please see the Research page for more details about the research scope and goal of our lab and relevant publications. Some relevant directions include but not limited to:

  • Implicit neural representation learning
  • Diffusion model / Score-based generative model
  • Physics-aware / Geometry-informed deep learning
  • Multimodal representation learning
  • Robust learning with missing data / noisy labeling
  • Data-efficient learning such as self- / un- / semi-supervised learning with limited data / labels

The Ph.D. student can be co-advised with other senior faculty members in the SIP&ML area at Umich ECE. Candidates with the following backgrounds are preferred:

  • BS or above degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or other related fields, with passion and self-motivation to conduct scientific research.
  • Either solid background in signal and image processing / biomedical imaging / computational imaging, or rich empirical experiences in machine learning / deep learning / computer vision.
  • Publication in conferences or journals of above relevant fields is preferred but not necessary

Faculty Bio

Dr. Liyue Shen will be an assistant professor at Umich ECE starting from Aug. 2023. She received her Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University, co-advised by Prof. John Pauly and Prof. Lei Xing. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2016. She is the recipient of Stanford Bio-X Bowes Graduate Student Fellowship (2019-2022), and was selected as the Rising Star in EECS by MIT and the Rising Star in Data Science by The University of Chicago in 2021. Her research interest is in Biomedical AI, which lies in the interdisciplinary areas of machine learning, computer vision, signal and image processing, medical image analysis, biomedical imaging, and data science. She is particularly interested in developing efficient and reliable AI/ML-driven computational methods for biomedical imaging and informatics to tackle real-world biomedicine and healthcare problems. Her research works have been published in both ML/CV/biomedical conferences (ICLR, ICCV, CVPR) and journals (Nature Biomedical Engineering, IEEE TNNLS, IEEE TMI, MedIA). She has successfully mentored several students with diverse background (e.g. EE/CS/Math/Biomedical Informatics) to publish in top conferences/journals in the past.

How to Apply

If you are interested, please send your CV, transcripts, and any demonstration materials, such as papers or drafts to liyues@umich.edu with subject “[PhD application]”. Please apply by Dec. 15th following the instructions here and mention Dr. Liyue Shen in your application (e.g., personal statement).

Disclaimer: Due to the large amount of incoming emails, I may not be able to respond to each one individually and timely (which I apologize in advance). However, I assure that I take a very close look at your background and contact you if there is a match of mutual interests.
